When I was in 7th grade, in 1970, my best friend was diagnosed with Lupus. The treatments at that time were experimental, and she wasn't expected to survive long. Her parents purchased a grave plot next to theirs. If it were not for MediCal, or Medicaid, her parents would have been bankrupted, lost their home, and joined the ranks of those in extreme poverty. My friend survived. When she was in remission, she worked as a talented graphic artist. She had many health setbacks over the years, but contributed to her community as a religious education teacher at her synagogue, raised a beautiful young woman to adulthood, and always cared for friends, family, and strangers. Her life was worth saving. The young woman who wasn't expected to survive lived 65 years. Thank you, Medicaid.

Thank you for this cogent and sobering summary, Sue. I was struck by your use of the verb kneecapping. I think that could be applied to the whole Republican effort to kill government. This is tragic, and it sucks. We must speak up!

Thank you, Susan. It is sobering and terrifying. What is not included in Part One are the many stories about people who will be significantly harmed and in some cases, die without Medicaid. I struggle every day, wondering how anyone thinks that this is ok. So yes, we must speak up. I hope my readers are motivated to do so.

I think you're providing both information and motivation for folks to take action, Sue, and that is critical. Thank you!
